Last week, DP World Southampton and Eurogate Hamburg welcomed the Marit Maersk, setting a new record as the longest containership to call these ports in terminal history.
The Marit Maersk at a length of 367 metres and a capacity of nearly 7,000 TEU made calls at both places during a positioning voyage from Europe to the Far East.
Talking about the milestone Campbell Mason, Managing Director, DP World Southampton, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Captain and crew of the Marit Maersk on her maiden call to Southampton, as the longest vessel ever to call at DP World Southampton. Looking beyond the current trading situation, the industry is trending toward ever larger vessels and we are continuing to expand our shipside operational capability to meet the longer term needs of our customers”.
Mark Cornwell, Operations Director, Maersk Line UK & Ireland, added: “As one of our newest vessels, the Marit Maersk includes many industry-leading technological and operational innovations which help preserve the environment. This includes a main engine and waste heat recovery system designed to achieve up to 10% reduced fuel consumption”.
During the vessel’s visit at Southampton the traditional plaque presentation took place between Captain Benny Rasmussen (vessel’s master), Stuart Morris (DP World Southampton’s Shift Manager), Captain Phil Holliday (ABP Southampton’s Harbour Master) and Geoff Lock (Maersk Line’s Operations Manager).
In Hamburg too the maiden trip of Marit Maersk was met with a lot of excitement and good coverage from the media. On her arrival at Eurogate Hamburg, she was greeted by a delegation from the Port of Hamburg Authority and the Captain of Hamburg Harbour, Joerg Pollmann. The traditional plaque of Hamburg Harbour was also presented to Captain Rasmussen. Despite the heavy fog in Hamburg on Monday morning the spectacular rotation manoeuvre of the vessel was viewed by many eager spectators before her departure to Asia.
Marit Maersk a G-class vessel signifies advanced technology. It is designed and built to meet the highest demands for a safe, economical, and environmentally friendly transportation of goods. To minimise the fuel consumption and thereby the CO2 emissions of the vessel, the 12-cylinder Wärtsilä diesel engine has been optimised for a more efficient and cost-effective service speed. As part of Maersk Line’s fleet, it will create further opportunities for our customers and consumers around the globe.
